I will then have to force quit applications to be able to restart the computer. Even after formatting and installing a clean OS with a bare minimum of applications, the problem persists. But after a while, everything slows down until just about anything I do results in beachballing and non-responding processes. The Mac will boot just fine and work without issues for some time. Although I didn't see the dramatic performance increase I was expecting, this at least restored my iMac to its former glory.Įventually though, the performance issues returned. They fitted a Crucial/Micron BX500 SSD (CT2000BX500SSD1). When my iMac was getting progressively slower and frequently ground to a complete halt, a local independent Apple repair provider confirmed my suspicions that the aging Fusion Drive was failing, so I decided to have it replaced with an SSD.
